Dual-Sport Coaching for Triathlon and Running (or Gravel)

Training for triathlon and running at the same time isn't about choosing one or compromising on both. It's about building a plan that lets you progress in both disciplines without overtraining, burning out, or getting injured.

Power2Tri specializes in coaching athletes who refuse to be defined by a single sport. Whether you're training for Ironman and a fall ultra, balancing 70.3 racing with trail marathons, or using running to build your triathlon engine, we know how to manage dual-sport load so you can excel at both.

What Makes Dual-Sport Coaching Different

Most coaches will tell you that you can't train for triathlon and running simultaneously. They're wrong. You can—but it requires intelligent load management, strategic periodization, and a coach who understands how swim, bike, and run training interact with ultra and trail running demands.

Dual-sport training isn't about doing everything all the time. It's about knowing when to emphasize triathlon training, when to focus on running volume, and how to structure workouts so they complement each other rather than competing for the same recovery resources.

We build training that prioritizes durability and long-term progression. That means workouts that serve both goals, recovery that accounts for total training load, and communication so we adjust before fatigue becomes injury.

Who This Is For

Our dual-sport coaching works for athletes who train across multiple endurance disciplines:

  • Triathletes training for trail marathons, ultras, or gravel races in the off-season
  • Runners adding triathlon training to build aerobic capacity and reduce injury risk
  • Athletes racing both triathlon and running events in the same season
  • Masters athletes who want variety, durability, and long-term progression across sports

If you've been told you need to pick one sport or give up performance in both, this approach proves otherwise.

How We Approach Dual-Sport Training

Training begins with understanding your goals in both sports. Are you training for Ironman and a 50-miler? Balancing 70.3 racing with trail running? Using running to build your triathlon base? The plan depends on what you're trying to accomplish and when.

From there, we structure training so workouts serve multiple purposes. A long trail run builds both ultra endurance and aerobic base for triathlon. Tempo runs sharpen both run fitness and lactate threshold. Bike workouts give your legs a break from impact while maintaining aerobic load.

We manage total training stress across all disciplines, adjust based on how you're responding, and communicate continuously so the plan adapts as your fitness, schedule, or goals evolve. The goal is sustainable progression in both sports, not short-term peaks followed by burnout.
